Welcome to the VK Contest Club’s unofficial guide to the strange science and art of winning contests.
Every operator has a few tricks up their sleeve — some polished and proven, others a bit questionable after midnight. 😉
Here’s what years of experience, caffeine, and blown fuses have taught us about improving your score, surviving the weekend, and maybe even grabbing a new record.
🎧 1. Know Your Contest Inside-Out
Before the first “CQ TEST” hits the air, read the rules — twice.
The winners always know which bands score double, when multipliers reset, and which sections are worth chasing.
Set up a simple one-page cheat sheet for multipliers, scoring, and exchange formats. Stick it above your monitor or tape it to the rig.
🟡 Dodgy idea: wait until after the first coffee of Day 2 to realise you’ve been sending the wrong exchange. Don’t laugh — we’ve all done it.
📅 2. Preparation Wins Before the First QSO
Build, test, and fix everything before contest weekend. Check cabling, macros, and time sync.
Have a spare mic, paddle, or USB interface ready. Murphy lives in every shack — don’t let him visit yours.
Pro tip: do a one-hour “mock contest” a few days before. It’s amazing what gremlins you’ll catch.
💪 3. Maximise Rate, Not Power
High power doesn’t win contests — rate and accuracy do.
Copy cleanly, log quickly, and avoid repeats.
Use your logging program’s dupe and multiplier windows to stay efficient.
If your voice or keying rhythm is smooth and consistent, people will line up to work you — even at 100 watts.
🟡 Dodgy idea: shouting your callsign three times faster than your computer can log it. The pile-up will thin… for all the wrong reasons.
🕹️ 4. Band Strategy = Big Results
Study propagation charts and old logs. Plan your band changes by hour.
10 m may open for only 20 minutes — miss it, and you’ve lost hundreds of points.
Use tools like VOACAP, PSKReporter, or Club Log to spot trends.
Rotate antennas smartly and listen before you call. The best contesters spend half their time listening and thinking.
☕ 5. Endurance Is a Skill
You don’t win a 48-hour contest — you survive it.
Hydrate, eat actual food (not just Tim Tams), and sleep in planned micro-naps if needed.
Log every contact cleanly; fatigue breeds typos.
🟡 Dodgy idea: double your QSO rate with energy drinks. Works great — right up until your station log starts recording conversations with the fridge.
🔧 6. The Station Matters — But Not As Much As You Think
Yes, big towers and stacked Yagis help. But most winning operators started small.
A single wire and good timing can beat a beam pointed the wrong way.
Focus on optimising what you have — clean feedlines, resonant antennas, good grounding, and quiet receivers.
And remember: great ears beat great watts.
🧠 7. Learn, Share, and Laugh
Join the VKCC mailing list or Facebook group and swap logs, stories, and near-misses.
Every VK contester — from QRP portable to mega-station — can teach you something.
We celebrate the victories, the busted QSOs, and the heroic failures equally.
The only truly dodgy idea?
👉 Not getting on the air.
